Phi Alpha Theta Scholarships and Prizes

Phi Alpha Theta/Western Front Association Undergraduate Essay Prize (December 1, 2011 deadline)

• A $1000 dollar prize for any paper written by an undergraduate student that furthers the understanding of the American experience in World War I and the impact it had on the United States.

Phi Alpha Theta/World History Association Paper Prize (June 30, 2012 deadline)

• Two awards of $500 each, one for an undergraduate paper and one for a graduate paper, which discuss world history events. Such events include any historical issue with global implications. 

The Graydon A. Tunstall Undergraduate Student Scholarship (March 1, 2012 deadline)

• Exceptional student members entering the Fall Semester of their Senior Year and majoring in Modern European History 1815 to Present are eligible to apply for this $1000 award.

Phi Alpha Theta Paper Prize Awards (June 30, 2012 deadline)

• Phi Alpha Theta awards six prizes annually for outstanding papers written by members of the honor society:

  • The George P. Hammond Prize of $500 for the best paper by a graduate student member of Phi Alpha Theta.
  • The Lynn W. Turner Prize of $500 for the best paper by an undergraduate student member of Phi Alpha Theta.
  • The Nels Andrew Cleven Founder’s Paper Prize Awards: two undergraduate and two graduate awards of $350 each for superior papers submitted by student members of Phi Alpha Theta

Graduate Student Scholarship (March 1, 2012 deadline)

• Phi Alpha Theta members entering graduate school for the first time and who are enrolled in a Master’s program in History are eligible to apply for one of the following:

  • The A. F. Zimmerman Scholarship of $1,250.
  • The Thomas S. Morgan Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.
  • The William E. Parrish Scholarship of $1,000.
