The Honors Program in History at Ohio State University
The History Department at Ohio State welcomes to its classrooms all students
-- whether majors or non-majors -- who seek the intellectual challenge
of an honors curriculum. The department provides honors sections of
courses in the University's General Education curriculum and honors
sections of the two courses required in the history major, "Introduction
to Historical Thought" and "Senior Colloquium." The faculty also
encourage honors students to engage in independent research projects.
The department offers "Introduction
to Historical Research toward that end. Students who are serious about
studying history are encouraged to apply for honors status, and honors
students are encouraged to major in history.
The faculty of the Department are dedicated to helping well-prepared students
explore history. Ohio State has one of the largest and most diverse history
faculties of any college in the nation, and its professors engage in both
teaching and research. Students who enroll in the honors program can benefit
from skilled and experienced guidance in writing, research, and analysis,
and are expected to reason carefully and communicate effectively.
Honors students enrolled in the Honors Program of the Colleges of Arts and
Sciences may become history majors. Honors students majoring in history
should either write a Senior Thesis or enroll in History H598.02, the Senior
Colloquium in which a faculty member guides a class in research projects.
Honors students should enroll in the "Senior Colloquium?even before their
senior year, and should enroll in that course up to three times. The faculty
encourages honors students to write a senior thesis and thereby earn a degree
with distinction. Students are also strongly encouraged to develop proficiency
in one or more foreign languages. The history curriculum includes
History H399: Introduction to Historical Research.
The Department of History also offers Research Internship in the Humanities
(H489) as an opportunity for honors students to gain valuable research
experience.
